Thirsty Thursday: Delight Directed Learning

In a few weeks we will be starting our fourth year of homeschooling but in many ways, I still feel like a beginner. I suppose that is because there is so much that can be learned about it. Delight Directed Learning is something that I am taking a particular interest in and my boys especially like learning this way. Basically you take a subject that your children are very interested in and you use that in your lessons.
For example, my youngest son, Jonathan, is very into tornadoes. So much so that he enjoys watching the specials about severe weather on the Weather Channel. So far he can tell you about the different speeds and categories of the different tornadoes and what part of the country sees more tornadoes than others. He is learning a lot on his own and it tickles me pink!
My oldest son, William, is our drummer. We bought him his first “real” set of drums about a year and a half a go. He has a natural talent for it and is very good. With some lessons, he will probably be a bona fide in no time at all. He has a curiosity for learning how drums are made. We have watched some educational videos on the subject and I have learned a lot myself!
I have a plan as far as how the school year will play out. My outline has been made for a month now and I have been gathering materials but even though it’s not written down, I will make room for the different topics and subjects throughout the year that interest my children. Homeschooling is such a blessing and taking the opportunity to let the boys explore the subjects that interest them most only makes sense to me!
Thirsty Thursday is a meme from Joy at Five J’s that’s goal is to offer a place where bloggers can share their thoughts and ideas about homeschooling and otherwise educating their children. You don’t have to be a homeschooler to participate. Head on over to Five J’s to read more!

It looks like you have a future meteorologist on your hands! How wonderful that your children show such intense interest in specific areas. That’s one of the fabulous things about homeschooling, that we can allow our children to learn about what they’re most interested in.
Keep up the great work, and thanks so much for participating!
I love the Delight Directed learning approach and it works well with my youngest. My oldest is textbook lover, so it doesn’t work with her. I have been home schooling for years and still feel like I learn something new each year! But that keeps it fun!
